Step into the south-east suburb of Springvale and you will instantly feel like you’ve been transported to Asia.
Filled with Asian supermarkets, alternative medicines, food markets and of course the famous food scene, it is a treat for all your senses. You will be spoilt with options for an Asian meal in Springvale. Consequently, deciding on a restaurant can be a little overwhelming!
We recently stumbled across a new hidden gem on Springvale Road, Thanh Dat. It was an instant mutual decision that it was going to be our new go-to spot for a Vietnamese lunch. This place is great if you want cheap Vietnamese food that actually tastes great!
The restaurant itself is not the prettiest and in my opinion, lacks character, however, it is huge and the service is very good and very quick, so I don’t mind. We ordered the tofu and asked for it to not have egg which the waiter made note of. Shortly after, the head chef approached us and kindly told us that there is egg in the tofu, but before we could grab a menu to re-order, he added on that he would run over to the supermarket across the road and buy some eggless tofu for us! Without a delay, we saw him rushing over from the window. He was so happy to help us out and we were very grateful for going out of his way to help us. What a guy!
The tofu, vegetarian steamed dumplings and the garlic broccoli is the usual spread we order to share. All of that with some steamed rice leaves us feeling full and content and only sets us back $45 between the 3 of us. Bargain!
Needless to say, the service here is impeccable. You are made to feel very welcome from the moment you step inside. Fuse that with delicious, affordable Vietnamese food and you get fantastic restaurant with worthy good reviews. Just don’t mind the distinct smell, you’ll get used to that.
